High Seas Hangout: Transforming an Attic Space into a Coastal Oasis

When homeowners approach us with unique design challenges, we relish the opportunity to bring their vision to life. The "High Seas Hangout" project was one such endeavor, where we had the pleasure of transforming a cold and uninviting attic space into a bright and airy coastal retreat. Located by the shore, this project aimed to create a space that catered to both adults and children, featuring an inviting hangout area and a serene office space overlooking the ocean.

Designing with a Coastal Touch

The attic space we were presented with was devoid of character, being used as a storage space with slanted ceilings and lackluster ambiance. Our primary goal was to infuse a coastal aesthetic, celebrating the proximity to the sea while ensuring functionality for the entire family.

  1. Color Palette: To achieve the breezy coastal feel, we opted for a light and airy color palette. Soft blues and muted whites dominated the walls, while light wood accents added a refreshing touch. This color scheme immediately brightened up the space, making it feel more inviting.

  2. Flooring: To counteract the coldness of the attic's existing flooring, we installed light hardwood floors throughout. This not only added warmth but also a sense of continuity in the space.

Creating the Hangout Haven

The hangout area was designed to be versatile, catering to both adults and kids. We wanted to ensure that the space could seamlessly transition from a playroom to a cozy lounge for the grown-ups.

  1. Furniture Selection: We chose a mix of comfortable, family-friendly seating options, including a sectional sofa and a few low rattan occasional chairs for the kids. These were upholstered in durable, easy-to-clean fabrics in beachy tones.

  2. Storage Solutions: To keep the space clutter-free, we incorporated storage shelves under the eaves of the attic. This served as a spot to stow away toys, games, and other items when not in use.

  3. Nautical Accents: To enhance the coastal theme, we added nautical touches like oars, sea creature decor, and playful surf themed bedding, which quickly became a favorite spot for the children.

Designing the Office with a View

In addition to the hangout area, we also designed a home office that offered a tranquil space to work or relax while gazing at the ocean view.

  1. Maximizing Natural Light: We positioned the office space strategically to take full advantage of the natural light streaming in through the third floor windows. This ensured a bright and inviting workspace.

  2. Custom Wallpaper: We opted for an accent wall with custom wallpaper to fit the color pallet of the landscape outside, making the most of the small space while providing an unobstructed view of the ocean.

  3. Practical Storage: A light white oak cabinet was added into the space to serve as a place to store the printer and organize files. This design choice helped add warmth and interest into the space by becoming a great place to display handmade artwork from Italy.

The "High Seas Hangout" project was a delightful journey of transformation, turning a cold and uninviting attic space into a coastal oasis for both adults and children to enjoy. By infusing the design with a coastal palette, versatile furniture choices, and thoughtful accents, we created a space that not only feels like a day at the beach but also serves as a productive home office with a view. This project is a testament to the power of thoughtful design, which can breathe new life into any space, making it both beautiful and functional.
